After studying Fine Art in Cardiff in the 1980s I came to live and work as an artist in Cheltenham. Many of my images are inspired by locations around my home, where repeated walking and viewing of familiar places reveal things that might be missed at first. The changing seasons and light can mean that a particular configuration of shapes and colours will suddenly appear and become significant.
For the last 25 years I have been using a printing technique known as ‘Pochoir’ – a French term for a hand-printed stencil, particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th century. I hand cut between one and twenty stencils for each image I create, then with acrylic paint and an assortment of brushes and sponges I build up layers of colour and texture. The nature of the technique means that there are usually between five and twenty prints in any edition, although I occasionally have images digitally reproduced.
